Memorial Day

Memorial Day at Sunset Park in Port Washington

Took this picture before the parade started and before the ceremonies at Sunset Park. The ceremonies were especially moving this year.
...
I spoke to my friend Cynthia this morning. She carries the breast cancer gene and is a 3-time survivor. She told me that she is healthy. Thank God!
I will walk for Cynthia again in October. With love.

Memorial Day

I live in a small town ... and Memorial Day is a big deal here.
We watched our kids march in the parade for many years.

Tomorrow this park will be filled with people.
...
I've been enjoying a 4 day weekend. That means that I have had an opportunity to take long walks every morning.
There's just over a month left to school ... then my training will really kick in!

NSAL ... and congratulations to my college graduate.

I pass the North Shore Animal League on my walk.
This fantastic shelter is where we adopted Mickey.

Love this dog walker!

Looks a little bit like Matsui and Joba on top of the sign!

This is the NSAL van ...
It gives new hope to puppies and kitties.

Had a good walk today.
...
Want to say Congratulations to Debra on her college graduation.
Deb ... I hope you will be walking by my side in October.

training schedule ... got to add "cross training!"

Countdown: 20 WeeksYour Training Schedule for This Week:
Monday-Rest
Tuesday-3 miles-Easy walking
Wednesday-15 minutes-Moderate cross-training
Thursday-4 miles-Moderate walking
Friday-30 minutes-Easy cross-training
Saturday-6 miles-Easy walking
Sunday-4 miles-Easy walking

Training Tip of the Week: Cross-Training
Cross-training can be a helpful addition to your Breast Cancer 3-Day training program. It allows you to build muscle endurance while decreasing overuse injuries. Remember the 10% rule: you should increase your activity 10% each week in order to give your body time to recover between your training walks. It is possible to do too much, too soon. Pace yourself and pay attention to how your body feels at all times. While walking is the most important preparation, other types of training that will help increase your stamina and strengthen walking muscles include:
Elliptical Trainer
Bicycling
Stair Stepping
Rollerblading
Pilates
Strength training through resistive bands or low weights is also an important part of your training program because it can build muscle. Muscle increases your endurance and burns fat better than fat does. It need not be an extensive weight lifting program. Interval or circuit training (i.e. Curves classes) alternate aerobic activity with strength exercises. They can be an efficient complement to your training program.

over 2000 visits!

Wow! My counter says I've had over 2000 visits!
That's great!
I wonder how many of those visits are by me!
Ha!

Peace

I pass this house on my walk.
I have always loved the sign ... which is in French on another side ... and Hebrew on a third side ... and I can't remember what language on the fourth side. I'll have to look next time I pass by.
I have just about reached my first $1000 today. What a great Mother's Day gift to us all.
Thank you for your continued support ... and for leaving the gift of a comment today!!!

babies ... fundraising ... and a long walk

The babies are out and about.
I was seriously given the "what for" by the goose across the street.
I gave it right back to him!
I feel like I've always been afraid to fundraise. It took me some time to put together a display to set up near the sign-in book at school.
Well ... the laminated letter and lucite display holder with copies of donation forms ... and a few brochures that I printed finally made their way to the front counter. Two checks were handed to me ... and I don't know how many forms were taken. I do hope the people I have worked with for so many years will make donations on my behalf.
The important thing is that it's not about me ... it's about trying to win the battle against breast cancer.
The teacher in the room next to mine suggested I set up canisters for loose change. Good idea.
The more training I do ... the better I feel about asking for support.
....
Speaking of training ... I started walking at 7:30 this morning ... and finally got home after 6:00 this evening. OK ... so I made a few stops along the way ... an hour-and-a-half at the nail salon ... and a visit to the local movie theatre to see "State of Play!"
My neighbors saw me just before 6:00.
They had seen me at 7:30 and again at noon.
Yup! Forrest Gump Harris ... that's me!

fundraising at "da skool"

So I finally took the plunge and set up "fundraising shop" next to the sign-in book at "da skool."
Was presented with two generous checks the first day!
What was I waiting for?

This picture has nothing to do with fundraising ... but it is me at "da skool" showing my allegiance to Skeezix on Halloween.

Goslings!

I was given a stern warning by a goose on my walk this morning. He really gave it to me good. Then I saw why! First goslings of the season!
These pictures were taken with my cell phone so the quality is pretty sad.

Cute little ones all in a row!

I walked in the rain. I prefer cool weather and rain to hot weather and bright sunshine! There were very few joggers, bikers, walkers out today.
Most of the walk I heard the sounds of rain ... birds ... and me! And that was ok!

Add another hill!

I walked an extra mile through Baxter Estates today. It's a beautiful ... very hilly area. I loved it. I think this will become a new addition to my regular route.
***
3-day sent an email congratulating me on reaching $500. The last donation was made in honor of my mom.
As I take extra steps training for 60 miles in October ... my mom is taking one more step each day as she recovers from her hip surgery. She's doing great!
***
I didn't see "the runner" and his dog today. It has been bothering me all week!
